She said it had been a problem for years but had been getting increasingly worse in the last few months with water levels at low tide dropping to below half-a-metre, or even drying out in some places. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) has announced a 26.5 million award to the Texas General Land Office to restore approximately 17 miles of the beach dune ridge. 'That waiting time might only be 10 or 20 minutes … but that could be the difference between life and death,' Ms Meng said. VMR Round Hill secretary Josie Meng said the shallow water delayed their response when time was vital.

The sand at the Round Hill Creek entrance where the VMR was based had shifted so much in recent years that the water was sometimes too shallow for the rescue boat to get out when they were called to an emergency.

The Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) crew at the towns of 1770 and Agnes Water in Queensland's Wide-Bay Burnett region are concerned that repeated calls for dredging have fallen on deaf ears, with fears mounting it is only a matter of time before a life is lost.
